When setting up for a shot, keep in mind that less, often times, is more in photography. Simple natural shots are sometimes the best ones. When you keep your backdrop and props simple, your subject has an opportunity to shine.

Be sure to find a subject who is interesting and compelling. Even the best equipment won’t produce an amazing picture if the subject is difficult to work with. Carefully choose objects that inspire you, or find a model who will pose for you.

Many times in life, we receive the training that things must be centered and even. Perfection is highly regarded in society, but to create shots full of drama, point your camera at your subject in a manner that positions them slightly off of center. Turn off any auto-focus mechanism that wants to lock your subject into the middle of the lens. Adjust your auto-focus settings in your camera before taking your photograph, to ensure that your picture will be focused on what you intend it to be.

When you have your shot lined up and it is time to hit the shutter button, stop breathing for a moment and don’t move a muscle. Even the slightest movement can destroy a great shot. Make sure to square up your shot and hold your breath before hitting a shutter button.

Always pay close attention to the natural light in the environment. The ideal lighting for outside photos is provided by the sun when it is low on the horizon. When the sun goes high in the sky, there can be undesirable shadows cast and the subject may squint because of the harsh light. You’ll be using sunlight to your advantage if you position your shot so that your subject is receiving the sunlight from the side.

Make sure your subject feels comfortable. This goes double if the subject is a stranger. Some people look at photographers as threatening. Be friendly, strike up a conversation and ask permission to take pictures. Make people understand photography is an art rather than an invasion of their privacy.

Do you want a wet or misty effect from rain for some photographs? Sometimes, the weather does not oblige; however, you can create your own rain by carrying around a water spray bottle with you to spray your subjects.

The tips from above will help you capture your special moments wonderfully. Learning to take terrific photos can be quite daunting; however, your hard work will pay off quickly.

When you’re scheduled to photograph more than one person in a shot, give them advice beforehand that will help them choose clothing for the best staging. It’s not necessary for them to wear colors that match exactly, but it will look much better in the final picture if they are wearing complementary hues. Warm and neutral colors will be most attractive for pictures in natural environments. If subjects want to show off some bright colors, clashes can be avoided by setting off the colors with black clothing.
